I've mentioned before how vampire stories, especially Twilight, are metaphors for abusive boyfriends.
This LJ'er actually does the abusive relationship checklist against the Edward-Bella relationship.
It's not pretty.

Zombie Messenger bag:

Topatoco, the people who handle our shirts and prints and that new messenger bag pictured above, have posted the Christmas shipping deadlines for the various methods of having things shipped to you.
Also, almost any print on the site can be bought as a print, if there's one that you think someone will love, or one that really reminds you of them whether it's flattering or not. Christmas is a time for brutal honesty after all.

I just found this in my attic. Me and N on the day we eloped, 1988. How did I get my hair so high? I know how, in fact - I learned about AquaNet from reading an interview with Robert Smith of The Cure.

4:07p the Ladies
Sappho's wound is healing really well. Here is what it looked like three weeks ago:

Here is what it looks like now:

The inside is still quite swollen, but she does not seem to be in any pain, and does not favor her paw at all. Though she lets Molly know not to touch this place. If you want to say I am a good dog mama, I'll take it. But most merits go to our vet, antibiotics, and Molly, who was engaged in intense licking and nursing sessions each day. Molly is a really sweet dog. ( Read more... )

5:53p Letters to the future, stamps to the past
I ought to be writing. Seriously, earnestly, unrelentingly. I ought to be using my sabbatical to hone my skills. I know this. But I'm short of attention and dreadfully uninspired these days.
A Real Writer, of course, doesn't wait on inspiration. A Real Writer writes, that's all, and no excuses shall get in the way! Therefor, she is not a Real Writer. Fair enough, game over, put my hand down, carry on.
Except Jessica doesn't give up that easily - even lazy, uninspired Jessica. I may not be a Real Writer, but I'm not giving up on writing-small-caps. It's the only thing I've ever been really, solidly good at. It would be a shame to divorce myself from one of my last strengths.
And more than that - listen, writing is important for me to keep up with, because of the sheer humanity of it. Writing something that other people might willingly read forges a pleasant, understanding sort of human connection out of a careful mix of language and personality. Now, I could be described generously as aloof, self-involved, socially inept and living inside a constant background hum of low-key embarrassment, so that sort of comfortable interaction is usually beyond my reach. But if I can write a livejournal entry, or an email, or maybe (gasp!) a poem, story, article, essay, then I can make a little human connection with somebody. Small, but it's real. It's graceful, it's genuine. If I can do this, I'm not completely broken or defective - just a little out of practice, maybe. Maybe the other types of human connection won't ever come as easily as writing; well, that's okay. I've got a safety zone here. I can advance and retreat as necessary, and try to meet other people where they communicate their own best selves. Some people are smooth talkers, kids, and some people just gotta sing.

Irony: A white male movie critic is whining that there are no decent men in the movie Precious. It was just a bunch of women and half of them were lesbians. The only male character was the abusive daddy.
Um. Hello, idiot. There was a male nurse played by Lenny Kravitz, and he had many scenes.
Fucking moron. When good black men are invisible to you when they're up on a 20 foot screen, maybe the problem is yours.
Also, if there aren't enough men in social work, that's no lesbian's fault.
