Hey, I left the house!

Got a funny email from [info]badgerbag saying that [info]rae_beta was in town and wanted to meet me in order to "eat my brain", which is apparently a compliment.

I said sure, and that we should meet at Comic Relief. I figured that if r-b was some weirdo and pulled a knife I could shout, "I work for VIZ! You must save me! Fall upon her blade! Drown her with your blood!" and all the patrons and workers would swarm her. But, of course, [info]rae_beta wanted to meet me because she works for Dark Horse and is indeed the in-house editor for Lovecraft Unbound, so she could have just shouted, "I work for Dark Horse! Seize him! I need to eat his brain!"

And as it turns out we just left the store quietly, together, and hung out for a bit. It was fun. I met pal Kerick too.

The Wrestler

Holy Shit, that's a movie. Riveting from beginning to end. And not the one to watch if you have Daddy Issues. But I'm still glad I saw it.

This article by Todd Purdum in VF is even more delicious now that Palin decided to quit.  It's in the upcoming August print issue, but they released it online this week.  Don't get all tldr; on it - stick around for page 6, which is even more hilariously prescient now.

It's 68 degrees here.

It's been like this for a week and a half. I don't know what's going on.

Days of Sorrow- 12'' Discography

To celebrate our upcoming independence day, well...here's something straight from the heart of Germany. In short, this is the complete discography of minimal wave/post-punk band Days of Sorrow.

According to sleeve information, the band featured a four piece lineup for their first 12'', changing drummers and expanding to a five piece for the second, which followed two years later. Not much else is known about the band outside of their origins, and their records fetch incredibly impressive prices, so let's get straight to the nitty gritty, shall we? Here's the information for their two 12'' releases, zipped up for your minimal electronic pleasure.

Days of Sorrow- Remembering the Days 12'' (1984, Tollhaus Records)
1. Wild World
2. War
3. Travel
4. Don't Leave Me Drowning

Days of Sorrow- A Thousand Faces 12'' (1986, Rough Trade Germany)
1. Wild World
2. A Thousand Faces (Night-Time)
3. Mysterious Eyes

*download both here*

There also exists a 1986-released 7'' for Wild World, but I'm gathering it's simply the A Thousand Faces recordings of both "Wild World" and "Mysterious Eyes," minus the eponymous 12'' track. I reckon the zip otherwise contains their complete discography. Enjoy!

yo,

house hunting sucks during the summer.  my agent's all, let's stand outside of our cars and discuss the market and loans. i'm like, dude i am going to fall down soon. this is what i have to say: 1. fuck this market; completely FML for it for PICKING UP THE SECOND I DECIDE TO BUY.  what, it's a competitive sharkfest now?  buyers are competing, driving bids up?  kidding?  no?  two places i've found, two places that within the day and a half that it took to get a showing to occur have been entered into contract.  wuttttttttt x 1000.

i just started looking, obviously, but i'm just saying.

Respect

NICE psychedelic soul version of Otis Redding's "Respect" (famously covered by Aretha in 1967) by the lovely Minnie Riperton with the Rotary Connection. I'd never heard this before!

#407) THE DIARY OF JANE SOMERS, Doris Lessing- This is a book about getting old, well written but a little too obvious.  The late 30's career woman of the title has no time and quite a lot of contempt for the elderly women who live in her building.  That is UNTIL she unexpectedly finds herself helping out and caring for one of them.  My how that changes things!  The plot is predicatble to a fault though the writing and the actual page by page going ons are not that bad.  Still, the too obvious sentiment is unoverlookable.
MUST I HAVE READ THIS BOOK BEFORE I DIED: no

407 down, 594 to go

And that is it for the 1980s part II.  I read a couple more than I needed to because I was forced to buy some at Half Priced Books (thanks to Teacher Appreciation gift cards!) because the SA LIbrary did not carry them.  Onto the 1970's again.  There are 53 titles remaining, I will read one third of them now- so will make it 18 in this decade.  Off to #408!!!!!

CURRENT RANKING OF FIRST 407 BOOKS..... )
